authentic CARD Buddha of Bamiyan

The Buddhas of Bamiyan (Afghanistan) were two monumental statues carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamiyan valley, situated 230 km northwest of Kabul. Once, they were the tallest statues of of standing Buddhas in the world. In the year 2001 they were destroyed by the Taliban against massive international protests. The demolition of this place of cultural interest was a peak of a long lasting struggle for this strategical place. The whole valley can be controlled by this place. From 1979 the Soviets were the occupying forces, later the mujahideen, followed by the Taliban.

In 2003, two years after the demolition, the UNESCO has accounted the Bamiyan valley as a World Heritage Site. Additionally it has been listed as an endangered World Heritage Site.

The building of the statues can be owed to their convenient location. The valley has been a crosspoint of important routes for commerce and pilger between China, Persia, India and the Mediterranean Sea.

The realization of this display was made possible by an accurate surveying of the statue by Prof. Kostka (TU Graz) in 1970, by a 3D model of the ETH Zurich (Prof. Gruen) and by the lenticular preparation at the TU Dresden (Prof. Buchroithner).
